"Living in Cincinnati" Recap

Last weekend, Murphy’s Pub celebrated its 50th anniversary—and Herzog Music was part of its “Dirty Thirty” weekend. Friday and Saturday a handful of artists and bands performed at Murphy’s and, on Sunday (October 20), we closed that weekend at the historic Herzog space with a panel discussion and preview of the We Were Living in Cincinnati compilation, which was assembled by author and musician Peter Aaron.

In Peter’s own words:

Being back in my beloved hometown of Cincinnati and reconnecting with the area's wealth of historic music sites—the King Records building, the Ludlow Garage, Cory's blues club, punk venues the Brew House and the Jockey Club, and the site of the 1979 Who concert tragedy—was moving enough. But standing in the hallowed space of the Herzog building, in the exact spot where Hank Williams and other legends recorded, while key figures from the city's deep punk past were recognized and able to orally enshrine their contributions alongside those of the many greats from other eras of Cincinnati music? That was truly humbling.

Link to check out that panel discussion is below. But first, a look at the weekend.

Karl Meyer got a handful of great photos from Friday evening’s show—check out some of those below.

Our pal Aiden got a few great photos, too—check them out, below.

There’s Video, Too

Karl also got footage of “Keith Richard's Dead” performed by Mike Enright and backed by an all-star ensemble of Cincinnati Punk legends. Check that out below:

While in town, Aaron was also a guest on Trash Flow Radio (WAIF 88.3)—see images, show summary and link below.

Trash Flow program host Ken Katkin shares:

On Trash Flow Radio (WAIF 88.3 FM) on Sat Oct 19, Cincinnati/NYC's own Peter Aaron Musician and Author (The Chrome Cranks, Sluggo, Avondale Airforce, Sand In The Face, & Peter Aaron / Brian Chase Duo) talked about his latest project: ‘We Were Living in Cincinnati,’ the definitive compilation of 1970s/80s punk from Ohio's Queen City (soon to be co-released by Shake It Records & HoZac Records). We also played ARCHIVAL CINCINNATI RECORDINGS from The Customs, Qi’zz, The Dents, The Ed Davis Band, Rose & The Arrangement, Dream 286, BPA, 11,000 Switches, Sluggo, Dennis The Menace, The Erector Set and The Chrome Cranks. Plus: Damien Jurado covering the Theme from WKRP in Cincinnati TV. Yo La Tengo covering The Customs. The late Kim Fowley talking about Cincinnati. Randy Cheek talking to MTV about Cincinnati. Plus: before Peter showed up: unrelated new tracks from Pictish Trail and Poppy Jean Crawford. Download it, ad-free, HERE.

Ah Yes, the Panel Discussion at Herzog

Panelists included Peter Aaron, Vivien Rusche (The Dents/Alterior Motives, The Malcontent), Mike Enright (The Ed Davis Band), Doug Hallet (The Dents/Latex Theatre/Dream 286), Robert E Beatty (Beef), Forrest Bivens (Beef/The Verbs/The Customs), John Schmidt (The Erector Set, The Malcontent), and Jim Cole (The Customs). In the first row of the audience was Tim Schwallie (BPA).

As guests like Tom Petersson from Cheap Trick, Steve Earle and Marty Stuart know, our headquarters in the historic Herzog space is home to a lot of memories and artifacts. On that point, we were thrilled to accept a donation on this evening as well; while a full press release is forthcoming, the screenshot below captures it in a nutshell:

If you weren’t able to make it—many weren’t—we were happy to get a recording so that others could enjoy (and so that we could reflect). Ready to give it a listen?

Friends, check it out below. Major thanks to volunteer house engineer Clint Stephenson for getting a board mix, and attendee Ken Katkin for capturing a “room mix,” which Clint was able to combine with his to share.
